At The Little Oasis Bath Co, we make all our soaps using the cold process method. Here's how we do it:
We carefully select premium quality oils, butters, essential oils, and other additives to create the perfect blend for our soap recipe. Sodium hydroxide is mixed with water to create a lye solution which is then mixed with the melted oils when it is at the correct temperature. Any additives like milk, clay, fragrance can be added here. Once the soap batter is poured into the mould, saponification occurs - which is where the lye reacts with the oils to form soap. It is important to note that with a precise and trusted formula, no lye remains in the soap once saponification occurs. After 1-2 days, the soap is cut into bars and placed on a curing rack for a minimum of 4 weeks before sale. The curing process is important, and this is where the soap hardens and produces a mild bar of soap. During this time, soaps are stamped and the edges are beveled. Cold process soap differs from many commercial soaps in several ways that contribute to its gentleness on the skin:
Glycerin Content: Cold process soap retains glycerin, a natural byproduct of the saponification process. Glycerin is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture to the skin, helping to keep it hydrated.
Natural Oils: Our cold process soap often contains nourishing oils like olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, cocoa butter and shea butter. These oils contribute to the soap's hydrating properties, helping to prevent dryness and maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier.
No Harsh Chemicals: Commercial soaps often contain harsh detergents and synthetic ingredients that can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. Our cold process soap is made with natural oils and butters and is free from sulphates, parabens, harsh detergents and phthalates that can irritate skin.
